The story of this home
St Augustine’s third presbytery
St Augustine’s third presbytery at 3 Jane Street is a two-storey brick residence associated with the neighbouring church. Archbishop Kelly laid its foundation stone on 16 July 1922. The building was blessed on 11 March 1923.
Its broad verandahs are enclosed by round arches rising from brick piers. The journal describes a terracotta-tiled roof, dark face brick, timber verandah railings and an arched entrance with a large fanlight. The raised ground floor relates to the level of the church next door.
The third presbytery replaced an earlier presbytery associated with Father John Forrest. That earlier house and its nineteenth-century occupants are distinct from the building photographed here; their history has not been assigned to the 1922–1923 residence. The journal’s statement that the third presbytery remained in use describes its publication period, not a newly verified present-day use.
