The story of this home
Rosebank (11 Jane Street)
Rosebank at 11 Jane Street forms a pair of substantial two-storey stone houses with Cairngorm at No. 13. William and James Burt built the pair in 1881. The journal suggests the stone may have been quarried on the site; that remains an attributed possibility.
Rosebank’s early tenants included Presbyterian minister Reverend J. M. Ross in 1881–1884, carpet warehouseman Charles Read in 1885–1888, and William Blackman in 1889–1891. On William Burt’s death in 1907, Rosebank passed to his sons William Andrew Burt and George Burt.
The sons sold the house to commercial traveller William Alfred Dolman in May 1911. He lived there until 1924 and later let it. Dolman sold to contractor William J. Heaslip in July 1929, and Heaslip sold to Balmain librarian Anne M. Kingdon in May 1948. The journal also describes a lease cancellation by Dolman in February 1930 after the stated sale; that sequence is unresolved and is not made into a timeline event.
The journal classifies the pair as Victorian Filigree and describes stone walls, tall French doors and cast-iron verandah decoration. The photograph is a shared view of Rosebank and Cairngorm at 11–13 Jane Street; it is not an isolated photograph of No. 11.
