177 Bay Street is part of a locally significant group of eight semi-detached Federation cottages at 165–179 Bay Street, Botany. Built between 1913 and 1915, the group was approved in 1913 as four pairs of semi-detached cottages, with M. D. Hughes recorded as the applicant. The houses were constructed on land that had once formed part of Simeon Lord’s large Botany estate and later the 1886 Lord’s Estate subdivision. The Bay Street cottages are valued for their Federation form, slate roofs, roughcast chimneys and strong streetscape rhythm beside Booralee Park. Although the façades have been altered over time, the roofscape and overall form remain substantially intact. The first known resident of 177 Bay Street was Herbert Williams, listed in the Sands Directory from 1915 to 1923. Later early residents included William Bannings in 1924, Sidney Johnson from 1925 to 1928, and Patrick Bickholf in 1932/33. The occupant for 1929–1931 could not be identified
