The story of this home
The Anchorage (formerly Fitzroy Villa)
Fitzroy Villa, now commonly called The Anchorage, was built in 1896 for John Gibson on Louisa Road, opposite the former Birch Grove House estate. The house represents the late Victorian aspiration to build substantial waterfront residences above the working harbour. It followed earlier quarrying activity on the land and stood between newer private villas and the industrial shore of Birchgrove.
The journal describes its design as an unusually late and ambitious example of the Victorian Italianate iron-lace style. On the Louisa Road side the residence presents three levels. The striking flat main roof was adapted for a rooftop lookout or “widow’s walk”, a feature that gave the household broad views across the harbour. This architectural arrangement distinguishes it from the smaller cottages and terraces elsewhere on the peninsula.
Gibson died at the residence in 1920, and the family continued to occupy it for years afterwards. Its survival helps tell the history of Birchgrove as both a maritime working district and a prestigious address for substantial private houses. The original journal photograph shows part of the Louisa Road entrance façade, credited to J Plank.
