Loyalty Square - Soldier's Memorial
Description & Observations
The Balmain War Memorial stands in Loyalty Square at the corner of Darling and Beattie Streets, unveiled on 23rd April 1916. It was among the earliest war memorials erected in Australia and originally housed local men who died in the Dardanelles campaign. The memorial has changed over time, with a later addition recognising service in other conflicts and commemorating local Victoria Cross recipients. Its restoration and relocation in the late 20th century also shows how the Balmain community has continued to care and reinterpret this public space.
