Description & Observations
Goat Island’s guardhouse formed part of the government establishment built around a powder magazine in the 1830s. Peter Reynolds describes convicts quarrying and levelling the western side of the island and constructing a wharf and magazine works.
The journal photograph identifies the guardhouse with the date 1836. Its history belongs to the penal and maritime landscape facing Balmain, rather than to a residential street. The record keeps the island’s location explicit and does not imply that it lies within Balmain’s suburb boundary.
