Description & Observations
St James’ Church grew from a local building campaign led by Father John Joseph Pollard. Land on the former Hereford House estate was donated by a resident named Shannassy. John Fletcher records the church’s opening in September 1878.
The church combined Pyrmont stone and New Zealand kauri pine with stained glass and decorative finishes. Schooling, music, parish picnics and voluntary associations made it a focus of neighbourhood life. Harry Stephens’s drawing identifies architect John Kirkpatrick and depicts the Woolley Street church.
