Description & Observations

Forest Lodge Public School opened on 1 July 1883 at Ross Street and Bridge Road, with provision for 150 boys and girls and 150 infants. It gained Superior School status in 1891.

Its first headmaster, William Bardsley, remained for almost four decades. Max Solling’s account describes his teaching, excursions and enthusiasm for sport, including cricket. Former pupils included Warren Bardsley and Douglas Mawson. The accompanying photograph records the school’s pupils rather than presenting a modern view of its buildings.
