Description & Observations
The school opened in May 1862 in a timber building also used by a Congregational church. Known initially as the Non-vested National School of Petersham, it enrolled 56 children under Thomas Pepper and his wife.
Growth and poor accommodation prompted a campaign for a permanent school. David Ramsay donated land at Norton and Marion Streets, and George Allen Mansfield designed the new building. The journal identifies the building shown in the accompanying photograph as the 1869 school, distinct from the first timber premises.
