Leichhardt Post Office
Description & Observations
Leichhardt’s postal service began in July 1881 in an unofficial office operated by George Bristowe Purdie. Rapid suburban growth soon brought demand for better accommodation and a more substantial service.
After considering rented premises, the Postal Department acquired land at Norton and Wetherill Streets. The permanent post office and residence were completed in 1888. The journal’s photograph, dated about 1910, shows the prominent corner building with postal staff outside. Its history links neighbourhood expansion with everyday communication and public service.
