Description & Observations

Hunter Baillie Memorial Church: a gift to Annandale

Hunter Baillie Memorial Presbyterian Church opened on 23 February 1889. Its name commemorated John Hunter Baillie, who had died in 1854, while its construction reflected the commitment and financial support of his widow, Helen.

Helen Baillie’s philanthropy extended to education, hospitals and other charitable institutions. At Annandale, she funded a church, hall, manse and furnishings, turning a personal memorial into a substantial provision for a growing suburban community. The journal attributes the church’s architectural design to Arthur Blacket and describes its tall stone spire as a landmark associated with Johnston Street.

The opening was itself a community occasion, bringing together ministers, congregation and choir. John Williams’s account, written around the church’s centenary, connects the building with Helen’s life, the family relationships behind its establishment and the people who began its ministry. It offers a place story in which the benefactor deserves as much attention as the man commemorated in the name.
