Description & Observations

Balmain Court House was constructed in the 1880s as part of an ambitious civic precinct fronting Darling Street. Designed by Colonial Architect James Barnet, the building opened in 1887, between the Post Office (1887) and Town Hall (1888). Its classical façade and ceremonial entrance were intended to signify the importance of public justice and government in the growing industrial suburb.Prisoners were once held in the older Balmain Watch House before appearing at the Court. A police station later attached to the Court House opened in 1926, after the Watch House closed, and subsequent extensions changed the complex. A photograph catalogued by the Museums of History NSW State Archives Collection shows the Balmain Post Office and Court House as a shared historical civic precinct. It is not a view of the Court House in isolation and its exact photographic date has not been established.Sources: Museums of History NSW, State Archives Collection, digital ID 4346_a020_a020000122 (undated original image); Professional Historians Association NSW, Phanfare 238 (September–October 2009), p. 9; NSW State Heritage Inventory, Balmain Courthouse and Police Station, item 1940213. Private review: Replaces the older multi-building Phanfare 1901 image proposal with a State Archives original catalogued as Balmain Post Office and Court House. This archive image includes both buildings and must not be described as courthouse-only. Original photograph date not supplied; do not use 1901 as the photo date. Court House is 368 Darling Street; avoid confusion with separate Town Hall #370.
