Description & Observations

The Balmain Post Office was constructed during the 1880s as part of the monumental Darling Street civic group. Designed by Colonial Architect James Barnet, the purpose-built post office opened in 1887 and replaced an earlier postal service at Queens Place. Its prominent tower and clock formed an important part of Balmain's streetscape, alongside the adjoining Court House and later Town Hall. A heritage account describes the post office and courthouse as a related architectural ensemble. The tower underwent major change in 1957, when its original high roof was removed, followed by reinstatement in reduced form in 1978. Later telephone-exchange additions also altered views of the historic buildings. The attached historic photograph from the Museums of History NSW — State Archives Collection is explicitly catalogued as Balmain Post Office and Court House. It depicts a shared civic precinct: the photograph must not be described as a view of the Post Office alone, and the image's original capture date is not established by the archival catalogue.Sources: Museums of History NSW, State Archives Collection, digital ID 4346_a020_a020000122 (archival photograph, undated); Dictionary of Sydney, Balmain Post Office; Chris McNamara, “Completing the Civic Skyline”, Leichhardt Historical Journal 15, pp. 3–6. The NSW heritage records identify 366B Darling Street for the post office; the precise current legal/site description remains subject to review.
