The story of this house
GladstoneGladstone is the name recorded for the detached, single-storey stone house at 10 Gladstone Street.
Thomas Coutts acquired the rear of a larger allotment from Moore and built the dwelling in about 1865, although the journal explicitly says the precise building date and first occupants are unknown.
Its uncomplicated rectangular form, hipped roof and front verandah belong to a restrained Victorian Georgian vocabulary.
Coutts died on 14 January 1868.
The family sold the property in August 1877 to Andrew Bogie, a Balmain hairdresser, while Charles Drake was in occupation.
A more varied series of residents followed: the journal identifies silversmith Alfred John Cresswell in 1879, waterman Herman Gerdes in 1881 and stonemason James Gilbert in 1882.
Those trades give a small domestic address a useful connection to Balmain’s waterfront and local crafts.
After Andrew Bogie died in 1886, his widow Lydia occupied the house from 1888 until her death in May 1916, with the journal noting a possible intervening occupant in 1901–02.
Her daughter Mabel and son-in-law George Percy Newey subsequently lived there for many years from 1917.
The original photograph on printed page 43, credited to Solomon Mitchell, is captioned as Gladstone.
Its caption dates the house 1853–55, whereas the historical narrative says about 1865; this discrepancy needs review before publication.
